Our Black Copper Marans have been a work in progress for over 5 years. They are a French breed known for their dark brown eggs. This breed is our darkest egg laying breed. They are docile, friendly, and sweet. Roosters have a base of black feathers with copper along the hackles, saddle, back, and shoulders. Hens are black with varying degrees of copper in the hackles. All American bred Marans should have feathered shanks. This is one of our favorite breeds on the farm and the most popular of our egg laying breeds. We can not guarantee egg color, but our breeding flock usually lays eggs in the 5-8 range on the Marans color scale with the occasional 9. We do keep some hens in the flock that lay very speckled eggs on a slightly lighter background. We love the speckles. They give the eggs so much character. Keep in mind that even though the hen may have the genetics to lay a very dark egg, egg color changes throughout the laying season with the darkest at the beginning and gradually lightening as the season goes on. Eggs also get lighter as a hen gets older. If you are purchasing hatching eggs, keep in mind color may be variable depending on how long each hen has been laying. Some lay throughout the winter and some do not. Eggs from our flock can be many different shades at any one time, but they all have the genetics to lay a very dark or very speckled egg. We sort through more than 50 growouts every year and only keep the very best in our breeding flock.

Hatching and collecting eggs depends on the weather, fertility, and when hens lay. We cannot guarantee a specific date, only a spot in line. Be prepared to receive your order at any time during the season. You will be contacted when your order is next up in line. If you cannot take your hatching eggs or chicks for any reason, you will be moved to the next hatch date. We will allow up to 3 reschedules, after which, the amount paid and the items in the order are considered forfeit. No refunds. We have a limited number of hatching eggs and chicks each year. When you reserve eggs or chicks, you are keeping others from being able to place their order.
 
There are no returns or refunds. We only issue refunds if we cannot fulfill your order by the end of the 2025 season. Hatching eggs are sold in either 1/2 dozen or 1 dozen. We only ship within the state of California. If you have a shipping address that is outside of California, your order will be cancelled. If you'd like to have your hatching eggs or chicks shipped, please add the appropriate shipping at checkout. Minimum of 6 chicks and maximum of 12 chicks for shipping. Maximum of 2 dozen hatching eggs per order. If you need to order more than this, please place multiple orders. Otherwise, choose "Pickup". When your order is up next in line, you will be contacted with a pickup date.
